How the Scheme works

The Motability scheme is designed to provide mobility solutions for individuals in the UK who receive certain disability benefits, such as the Personal Independence Payment (PIP) at the enhanced rate. If you qualify, you can use your PIP enhanced rate allowance to lease a mobility scooter through Motability.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Eligibility: You must be receiving the enhanced rate of PIP to qualify for the Motability scheme for mobility scooters.
  2. Selection: Once you’re eligible, you can choose a mobility scooter from a range of options available through the Motability scheme.
  3. Leasing: Instead of purchasing a mobility scooter outright, you’ll lease it through Motability. The cost of leasing is covered by your PIP enhanced rate allowance.
  4. Payments: Your PIP enhanced rate allowance is used to make monthly payments for the lease of the mobility scooter. These payments are usually made directly from your PIP allowance to Motability.
  5. Support: Motability provides support throughout the lease period. This includes servicing, maintenance, and insurance for the mobility scooter.
  6. Flexibility: If your needs change or if you no longer require the mobility scooter, you can return it at the end of the lease period and choose a new one.
  7. Contact: If you have any questions about the Motability scheme, including the process of getting a mobility scooter, you can contact Motability directly. They provide assistance and guidance to scheme participants.
  8. DWP: The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) oversees the PIP benefits and can provide information about eligibility and the enhanced rate.
  9. Free Standard Car: In addition to mobility scooters, Motability also offers the option to lease a car if you prefer. This can be done using your PIP enhanced rate allowance as well.
  10. Contact Number: Motability provides a contact number for individuals who have questions or need assistance with the scheme. This number can be found on their website or through DWP.

Overall, the Motability scheme provides a valuable opportunity for individuals with mobility needs to access essential transportation solutions using their disability benefits.
